Movies or books like this?
I really enjoy this type of story. Victorian, dark and gothic horror, an unstoppable force, curses, occult, that sort of thing. I like the darkness of it.

Unfortunately it's not that common in most media, as horror usually revolves around killers and so on. So can anyone recommend any good movies or books that are similar? I've read some Lovecraft stories and those are good. American Horror Story is a good TV show, quite dark.
I can't think of very much in the movies though.

In the Lovecraft mood, try Poe and some others relatives, Stoker, Byron, in the 18/19 century there were some very good gothic novels.
Movies i might suggest The leggend of Hell House, a "Rose Red" like movie of an infested house, from a Matheson novel.
Or Session 9, a great thriller of asbestos remove workers into an old asylum, with Dave Caruso, really spooky.
But yes. likely you need to go back to some old movies, lately there's an overusage of demonic possessions and ghosts.

Hm I don't know how much it fits into what you are looking for, but I liked Room 1408 (If you don't know it already). A movie of one of Stephen King's short stories.

The House on the Boarderland by William Hope Hodgson is pretty good. It's an early 20th century novella that is supposedly a pretty big influence on Lovecraft. Definitely Poe. Nathainel Hawthorne. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde is more of a human corruption sort of story with a hint of supernatural stuff. I've only read Sheridan Le Fanu's short story Carmilla, but I think he's supposed to be a good Victorian gothic horror writer.

I don't know if this is really what you're looking for, but Gaslight is a good old movie from from the 40s. It's a psychological horror movie about a man who is driving his wife insane.

That's all I can think of on the spot, but I hope more people keep replying. Always looking for more of these kinds of stories.

Sadly, I have no clue. I've only ever seen it on classic movie channels on tv. I wish you luck in finding it though!

Found it, Angoscia in italian, but it's the '44 remake with Ingrid Bergman and Angela Lansbury, it's the same you were saying?

Yeah, that's the one I'm thinking of. I knew it was originally a play, but wasn't aware it was a remake. Now upon looking it up though, it is indeed. I'll have to check out the original sometime.

Mate, just buy the whole collection of Lovecraft from Barnes and Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/barnes-noble-leatherbound-classics-hp-lovecraft-h-p-lovecraft/1106658815?ean=9781435122963

For $18 you get some of the most sensational tales of cosmological horror ever written. They all share the same tone with this game. If you are being particular, read Shadow out of Time and Colour Out of Space, both of which has elements akin to this game. Shadow out of time is my favorite, it deals with a man suffering from 5 missing years of his life (temporary amnesia) and him trying to discover what happened to him in that time.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've seen/read a few but not the rest so I'll add them to my lists.
I liked Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch House.
The Woman in Black movie is also good, it's a Victorian-set ghost story.
And I've read heaps of Stephen King.

Still haven't quite come across much with this sort of dark occult force. It's hard to explain but having played the game you know what I mean.

Lovecraft stories are royalty free too. You can download them from the internet legally for free because they are out of copyright. My friend hosts the full Lovecraft collection for free as a pdf on her site (google it).

A currently running Image Comics series of graphic novels called Fatale. It flits around time periods but is very much influenced by Lovecraft and full of the dark occult force you mention.

It's quite strange really but although I could list a ton of films influenced by Lovecraft (The Thing, Promethius and the Mist being some of the more famous) I can't think of any set in his period.

Arthur Machen. His work was one of Lovecraft's big influences, and it's IMO actually a closer fit with A:TDD's style than Lovecraft's. Of the authors I'm familiar with, his work "clicks" with A:TDD the most.

There's some other authors/stories I would love to reccomend, but that don't meet the criteria to various degrees, so I'm not sure how welcome they'd be.
