Outlast is a jumpscare game where you fear the flashing screen and loud sound that's about to happen every 2 minutes. Strip away the jumpscares and there's really nothing scary left.
They're 2 entirely different games, despite the fact that they're both 1st person games without weapons. Stop comparing the two.
If you appreciate a high amount of replay value, definitely choose Amnesia. It's got tons of custom content created by its community.
Run down A to B pathway scanning everything for collectibles and running to a spot and waiting 1 minute everytime a monster appears
Amnesia takes a 40 minute to built.
Outlast have frequent challenges, even in puzzles they sent enemies after you. It gives you no breathing, no break. While Amnesia has these 'contrast' places, puzzle hubs that make you feel safe to only prepare you to horrors ahead. Also amnesia is more video gamey, and I'm saying this as a compliment because we live in a pretentious age that walking simulators considered as high art, unfortunately. Amnesia has inventory and sanity system to spice up to gameplay but ironically Outlast manages to invite more player involvement without having cool gameplay features.
I think Amnesia is a very smart game. But when you think about it, it too smart for its own good. While Outlast wants be challenging with its persistent enemies and encouraging players to getting good, Amnesia throws you in fake dangers, situations designed for avarage players in mind to beat without failing in order to prevent breaking their immersion. The two games are good for what their worth but whatever their pace may be, they both lack actual danger and the progression loss as the best deterrant. I wouldn't go ahead and called them masterpiece. Neither of them. Their most notable difference is contextual and that's something to do with personal tastes.
