Why does Daniel go insane when viewing the Gatherers?
You probably would freak out when getting jumpscared by a monster in darkness but in broad daylight Daniel still goes insane if he views the monsters.

He's not just merely scared of the dark. He has nyctophobia, which is an intense or severe fear of darkness.

But yeah they're hardly the most disturbing monster in horror. The old woman in The Shining is more frightening.
This game doesnt exactly have the realest looking graphics. Imagine a grunt is standing in front of you. This thing has flesh hanging of its body. Is BADLY covered in bandages. Covered in blood and has a REALLY messed up hand. And is constantly groaning at you. Plus you have to take into account that Daniel has taken the amnesia drink. Theres no telling what other messed up stuff that potion does to the brain.

It's actually really strange. When you're young and nurse is going to inject you, she often tells'' don't look while I'm doing this''. The thing is. most kids want to know the moment the injection takes place so it's less frightening to watch this and prepare. The same logic applies in machine for pigs, where protagonist isn't affectioned by looking at manpigs. So the only reason why Daniel could be opposite, is because despite taking amnesia potion, the view of those monsters still gives him touches of horrible actions which he took during his stay in castle. It's like being an addicted to sth, try to get over it but at the start of the process, the very sight of your previous urges gives you unpleasant chills.
