Are all encounters with monsters scripted?

I noticed throughout playing that the monsters come only when I pick up stuff, do a task, or attempt to leave a room, and it was like this my whole playthrough. Do monsters come out randomly, like if you wait in a spot in the Prison they'll inevitably come find you?

That would be cool. But sadly no. There is no patrolling monsters.

It depends, most are scripted and will disapear but some are patrolling (example in the last area of the sewers he will not disapears until you escape the sewers : https://amnesia.fandom.com/wiki/Sewer )

All appearances are scripted, there are no "random" encounters, but some areas have patrols.
