Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

View Stats:
Game has suddenly become incredibly dark. Brightness doesn't work anymore.
I recently purchased a new graphics card and 4K monitor. When I ran Amnesia the other day, I was playing a custom story when suddenly the screen went black for a few seconds and when the image came back, the graphics were nothing but color bars.

I somehow managed to exit the game normally but when I ran it again, the image was now SUPER dark and adjusting the gamma did not do anything.

Now strangely running a custom story that has its own launcher, like "Amadeus", it looks normal. But the main game is still very dark.

UPDATE 1
I think I should mention that when running the game, the screen will flicker to black again and again before the game actually starts. I don't know what that's about.

UPDATE 2
Okay, so I tried changing the resolution to something other than the monitor's native resolution of 2560x1440 (in this case 1920x1080). I exited the game, started it back up and the lighting was back to normal. I changed it back to the native resolution, exited, started it up again and now the lighting is back to normal. I have no idea why this worked but it did. So right now all I'm worried about is my monitor hiccuping again and doing what I described in the initial post. I may have a fix, but I still would like to keep that glitch from happening again.

UPDATE 3
Disregard update 2. The game is now super dark even on other resolutions and switching them around did not fix the lighting this time.

UPDATE 4
I might have found a fix. I was able to turn off my monitor's HDR settings in the computer's settings and that seems to have fixed it. Seems a little silly to have to flip that on and off anytime I play the game, but at this point, I'll take it.

Does this problem carry over to any other games, or when you tab out does the color look off on the desktop?

The only suggestion I have is to look under windows display settings and make sure "Night Light" is turned off, and check on the same page to see if "Windows HD Color Settings" has anything enabled and mess with that. My monitor doesn't support any of the options there though so idk what they even do.
Should be under Settings>Display

Hope you get it sorted out!

Thanks for your advice, but "Night Light" was already turned off when I went to check it. It's now only becoming darker at random times. Sometimes it starts up okay, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the resolution trick works, sometimes it doesn't. With a game that's now ten years old, I guess some hiccups are to be expected. Then again, there still is no excuse for it to start glitching this way.

Once again, thank you for your suggestion.
