Thanks for the info, guys, I was stuck on this too. I've even watched a few videos and tried to turn the wheels on the machine in the same succession as they did, but nothing helped. I even tried to mirro the way the weights are hanging in the opposite room where the machine that drives the lowering of the first bridge are at. lol
Now I'm going to try trhowing rocks at the chain and at the bridge itself. Wish me luck. ... And good luck to you too, artkivicar. :)
And now that I'm back in the Cistern Room and the Control Room I can't lower the second bridge.
Have I "broken" the game by leaving the area at a time when I should have stayed and lowered both bridges instead of only one?
I'm at my wits' end and will be very grateful to anybody who can provide some advice. Thanks in advance.

Guys, have you been talking about the first bridge here? - I'm trying to lower the second bridge, the one opposite the first bridge, but there is no chain anywhere in the room other than the chains holding up the first bridge, and though I can aim at the bridge alright, and I see the stones and bricks that I throw make a high arch towards the bridge and then fall down again, they never reach the bridge which is simply too high up, there's just no way I can throw that high.
I remember hearing those clicks every time I turned the wheels, but for some reason I never thought it was a cue to stop turning the wheel further. This player made me realize it, I went back in-game, and sure enough, the bridge came down half way. I threw a rock at the bridge, it didn't make anything happen, I then threw another rock at the chain holding the bridge, and that did the trick.
You guys have been helpful too, bytheway. :)
There are many things I might not have thought of, such as throwing rocks at the bridge/chain-holding-the-bridge - it's not self evident from the hints you get in-game which says the lever needs a push.
