Using objects/mailboxes

So in the game you pick up a few objects as you play including a plush toy and a postcard. You can "use" these objects in the menu but Piku holds them above their head and doesn't do anything with them.

This kinda frustrated me because at the beginning of the game the ghost specifically tells you to send postcards to him and there are mailboxes in the two towns. I assumed I'd be able to use the postcard in front of the mailbox to send it but can't get it to work.

Has anyone figured out how to use items or what purpose they serve other than collection?
