Friends online but says no one online in-game

Me and my friend are trying to play and it says we both have the game and when we load it up it says 0 friends online in-game so i cant invite him even though he is on the game. Also when i veiw the community forum for the game it says u have 1 friend who owns this game and it isnt the friend i am playing with but in my library it says he does have the game? Please help
