Steel Division: Normandy 44
Possible interesting Battlegroups in SD2
What are some of the interesting divisions or battlegroups that might be in SD2?

One of my favorite parts of SD44 is the history of the conflict and the units that took part. I went into the game with a solid understanding of the normandy campaign, Western front and the units. However i found that the game made me dive back into the history and I learned quite a bit more. I'll admit that my knowledge of the Eastern Front starts at less detailed level especially when it comes to the units involved. I'm already enjoying diving back into the history of the Eastern Front and Operation Bagration. So what are some interesting units that I (and other history nerds) should look into or that might be in the game?

The Hungarian "bicycle" troops had no bicycle anymore in 1944, they were motorized.

Soviet (independant or not) tank brigade were hardly the size of a German regiment. They wouldn't fit as a division, more as an attachement to an infantry division, the way we attached British/Canadian tank brigades or German StuG-Brigades to SD1's infantry division.

Okay thanks. couldn't tell if the bicycle troops had been motorized or not. I am curious for the first time whether horses might actually be included. Obviously they were an important part of transportation in normandy but I didn't realize how much non-motorized cavalry there was on the Eastern Front even in 1944. (Not like they fought mounted or it'd be an important gameplay piece)

Yeah I meant that particular Soviet Independent Brigade would make a great attached unit to a partisan "division". Shoulda worded that better haha.

There were:
* two Soviet cavalry corps (3rd & 4th Guards)
* two German cavalry brigades (3. & 4.)
* one Hungarian cavalry division (1st and only one).
Cool thanks MadMat. Although i thought Hartnecks Cavlary had a full division + those 2 brigades? Am I counting the 1st Hungarian twice?

Anyway I think that's pretty interesting because I can't think/remember any actual horse cavalry on the western front (there was some cavalry in some of the smaller more remote theaters).
If I saw that video correctly and terrain has more of an impact on the game now, this can allow mid and low tier units to become way more effective in certian situations. Pretty excited if this is how it works out and how that plays with units on the field.

Gruppe/Korpsgruppe/Kampfgruppe Harteneck, aka latter rebranded I. Kavalerie-Korps, has gone through many organizations.

Initially, when created and engaged to face the left wing of Operation Bagration, it was made up of (from memory):
* 3. Kavalerie-Brigade
* half a Tiger battalion (507 if I recall)
* survivors from (129.) Infanterie-Division
* 18. Panzergrenadier-Division's Panzer-Abteilung (actually made up entirely of StuG)
* Panzerjäger-Abteilung 7[xx] (the first one to get Hetzer later in the campaign, to replace its losses)

Also 2.Pz.Jag.Abt 53 (21 JagdpanzersIV) from 5 Panzer Division. Due to transport disruption Jgdpanzers were diverted to Baranovicze instead of Borisov and subordinated to Harteneck.

KGruppe Harteneck was a hell of a wacky unit. Some of it’s units had very modern equipment (1100 MP44s in 4. Kavalerie Brigade) next to very old and captured in others.

Also it had subordinated 221. Panzer Kompanie (handed over from 12.Panzer Division) which had a plethora of Panzer prototypes:

VK 901
VK 903
Vk 1303
VK 1601

we will most likely see 5th panzer in SD2 right from the start. they played a big role during the minsk operation. Festung minsk also will be at release most likely. to bad there is not much information about the equipment of 5th panzer.

Entire thread on 5th Panzer during Bagration. It’s in Polish with some Russian and German Reports, but info on divisional vehicles should be readable. If you need translation let me know

Thanks MadMat. I guess it's gonna take a little while to get used to the fluidity of unit composition while learning more about this campaign. I used to the more permanent (rigid?) Structures of the Western armies/early war. But I guess with the rapid movement of the eastern front summer 44 and need to continually reform fighting units mid-operation alot of Gruppe are going to look very different over a short amount of time?

This game musta been/is a real challenge even for you to research?
