Panzergrenadier vs Grenadier vs Pioneer and things
Hi,
I'm wondering what the difference between the various infantry units - especially the 10 to 9 men squads - in the German roster are. Like, what's the difference between panzergrenadier and pioneers and strumpioneers and Lw and fallschirmjager and such, and when should I use which?

Also, can fuseliers actually hold the line?

Thanks

Pz. Grenadier
Optimal range: 101-150m
This unity is good for suppressing enemy troops up to 400m and destroying squads within the optimal range. They are equipped with Panzerfausts and are good for making your enemy think twice before they decide to vehicle rush. Below 100m they become as weak as ersatztruppens.
They are capable of destroying squads within 101-150m range due to their double MG 42s
Highly efficient in bush fields since it limits the max range to 150. Efficient in buildings not too close to other buildings on a road.

FS-Jäger
Optimal range: 101-150m
An upgraded version of a Pz. Grenadier dealing more damage.

Pioneers
Optimal range: Below 100m
This unit is good for closequarter combat and has the capability to fight even in 400m range. They usually destroy two infantry squads with their frag grenades if they survive long enough.
Can be used to assault towns and forests. Hold the ground fine against non specialized long range allied infantry.

Sturmpioniers
Optimal range: Below 100m
This unit is great in closequarter combat, especially around buildings since they set them on fire disabling the enemy from hiding inside the building. They are more micro intensive than Pioneers with their smoke nades and careful positioning. They are ONLY efficient in 100m range unlike the Pioneer who can put up a fight even up to 400m range.
Fantastic in towns or areas with lots of buildings. Good in forests.

Lw-Jäger
Optimal range: No optimal range
A more expensive fodder unit compared to Ersatztruppen. They are equipped with an MG 15 which is a weaker version of the MG 42 when we compare the suppression of the two.
Holds ground better than ersatz, but fodder to detect enemy infantry.

Füsiliere
A pioneer where you replace the frag nade with 100m AT nade and recon capabilities.
Good for lone buildings on a road to surprise vehicles or infantry.

Fusiliers can't really hold the line alone. They need to be combined with other stuff. They can delay/damage enemies a lot if there's a building on a road and the enemy has lots of vehicles they want to rush through you.

FS Jager are the best infantry in game, by the way, in terms of pure DPS above 100m. Under 100m the allies generally have an advantage.

Recon units cannot hold a front, since they do not affect the frontline, but you can certainly use them to back up Grenadiers and Pz Grenadiers, or use them on their own with a command unit if you really need to.

All German units with a Panzerfaust are excellent tank killers, and most have dual MG 42s or 34s that can easily defeat vast numbers of allied troops due to 4.5 HE each and lots of suppression, as well as a longer range compared to Brens and BARs. Under 100m, the allied SMGs generally tip the balence in their favour, except for Canadian and Polish rifle squads.

The Germans also have many cheap infantry units, which are mostly cannon fodder. However, the Luftwaffe infantry is a very good unit as their MG has 4 HE, and they are cheaper than normal PZ Grens by 10 points. This is still easily enough to win a battle above 100m with 4 British rifle squads, due to the high supression.

As a rule of thumb, keep away from CQB with allied troops, except for specialist squads with Geb 9s or flamethrowers, or Stobstrupp that 17th SS and 1st SS get.

Ok Thanks!
Just as a side note I've seen some German infantry with 1 LMG and 2 SMG, but like, it's just an SMG. Are they considered to be specialised for close ranges?

Most allied squads have 2 SMGs, and some have more, so try not to risk your infantry in such engagements.
