I have had a similar experience with a hidden 17 pounder hidden in a hedgeline but solved the problem with the deployment of recon troops.
Once spotted and located it was easy to eliminate.
You have to bear in mind that once under fire, tanks button up and visibility is severely restricted.
I understand what others are saying and admittedly I don't own the game yet, but if his tank had already spotted the gun and were aiming at it, why should it go invisible again? I can understand if the unit had not spotted it yet, but if he's looking right at it and preparing to fire, why would that go away just because the at gun stopped firing?

Also, the Nevada desert is a far different terrain than the hedgerows of 1944 France, and naturally it's easier to spot an AT gun when you're 30 feet away as opposed to 1200 meters away, inside a tank, with a vision-port that's only inches wide. ;)
