Stuck trying to expand town.

Hi, I am in need of wood to expand the town for a main quest, does anybody know where to get wood?

I finished the game a long time ago, but it seems to me that the wood is sold in the shops (maybe the one located just before the place where you go on a mission).

they come from pretty much all destroyable wooden objects. I'm quite sure I got them from barrels and benches and boxes and stuff, too.

If you really want to farm them, I'd try Alabasta. There are plenty of dead trees in the desert areas. In free roam you can just ignore the enemies and zip through the desert to knock the trees down.

im stuck with one problem, however, once in free roam in alabasta, i cant leave

Return to the starting point of the level, the game will ask you if you want to leave. Otherwise, at each middle of the level, you will find a plant that allows you to leave. It is indicated with a colored arrow (not the white arrow).

Now for the last issue... what even is a big wood and how do i get such a thing?
