Zork Anthology

Zork Anthology

Access SAVE File
Please provide everything needed to access the saved files for the first 3 games.

Trying to open the saved file directly is a bit more complex now than it was 30 years ago.

Thank you.

I played ZORK to completion 30 years ago, so I know all the commands. (I also played ZORK 2 and 3, all from legally acquired, original Infocom disks.)

And I know how to open a saved file from a second 360K (or 180K) floppy disk in the 2nd floppy disk drive.

But I want to know how to access a file when the command to open it no longer has any relevance.

Thank you.

As shown in the commands listed above, you simply type "restore" in-game to open a previously saved file (using the "save" command). There is no need to browse to specific directories via DOS, the game takes care of that for you. All you need to do is name the file you want to save or restore. This works exactly as I've mentioned in the version here on Steam.
Thank you.

I appreciate your efforts.

(When I saw EVERY command, (instead of just one) and a search for "file" served no purpose, I presumed my question had been poorly stated.)

Ok, so Zork requires a SAVE folder to exist in the same folder as the game, and, helpfully, the distributors at myabandonware.com have omitted this folder from their zipfile. So, the game tries to save to a nonexistent folder and fails.

You can fix this yourself by creating a new folder called "SAVE" in the same directory as zork1.com. Once that folder is present, you'll be able to save and restore just fine - just press enter when prompted for a path, and it'll use the game's default path ("C:SAVE\ZORK1.DAT").
Considering the original option when I first played was either a 180K or 360K floppy disk in floppy drive B, this seems WAY sophisticated!

Here's the scoop in simple terms:

SAVE...then either accept the default, or enter your own name. (Creating a directory for SAVE files is a good idea.)

Then RESTORE, when it's needed. Enter the name of the appropriate save file.

Forget all that other confusing crap (at least as far as SAVE files.) These two commands are what you need, and the full list of commands serves no purpose in this context......

ENJOY a great game!

Not sure what you're referring to in regards to having to create a new folder. The version here on Steam does not require that to be done. If you are reffering to another previous version of Zork, you might want to make note of that so as not to confuse players who are reading this discussion topic to find out how to save in the Steam version of Zork (simply using "save" and "restore" and naming the file in question).

You can right click on the game in the inventory, bring up its properities, and look at the directory contents, and it'll open the path in explorer, and you can find the directories quite easily. The only thing I found is that Planetfall doesn't create the save directory for you.

Restore, then your save file name.

Steelcamp and Neozeed have the answer I was looking for - Planetfall would not save with the default nor with attempting to change the path (since its not using a literal path but an emulated one).
So if you go to your Steam install directory\steamapps\common\Zork Anthology\Planetfall and create a "SAVE" folder, the game will let you save.

I don't see save folders under Beyond Zork or Zork_Zero either - but have not tried them yet.

hey guys, so I'm having trouble saving my game (on the orginal zork game). Creating new folders and all that does not help. I have been using the in-game commands (I'm on a pc btw); I play the game and type "save". It allows me to save it as "save.1". When I exit the game and reopen it, I type "restore" and when prompted for the file name I type in "save.1". Doing this bring back the exact number of point and moves I had (at the top of the screen) but the text still has me back at the begining of the game at the mailbox. Does anyone know a way to resolve this, am I just forgetting a simple command?
Chet Wallaby Mar 29, 2019 @ 7:32am
and now it's not even letting me do that :/
Chet Wallaby Mar 29, 2019 @ 7:37am
Okay nevermind! I've resolved the issue. If anyone else was having the same problems as me, even though the text does not show up, if you simply type a move command and game resets to where you were. So just remember were you were last and it should work!
