"save Save state to a file"
When I try to do this, nothing happens. I am playing on a laptop which, when I hit my "Zork I" icon, opens DOSBox, a DOS emulator. I can play the game, but when I close it, that's it. If I reopen the game, I have to start from scratch.

The formatting of the text I copied to paste here unfortunately did not transfer well, particularly regarding the source's original column spacing, and as such took a toll on the readability of the command list. The actual command to save is literally the word "save" (without the quotes). The save state to a file was meant to serve as a descriptor. Once you type in the word "save", you will be prompted to create a name for the save, and then hit enter. To load your savegame you will use the word "restore", which will then prompt you to name the file you want to load. The in-game text conveniently mentions the name of the last save you utilized.

Yes, I knew all that. The problem is that I am playing the game in the DOS emulator, which apparently won't save to my hard drive. Unless someone knows a way to do this.

I was having the same problem and finally figured out that it doesn't like a path like c:\gaming\zork1.dat. If you use a path without that first backslash, you can save and restore. It also doesn't like a drive other than C:.
lol...
