Thanks for testing. This does indeed sound as if the game is just not aware that you are wearing the headset because there is no sensor for it. Even though we do not officially support this (yet) we can try to add an overwrite to enforce 3D mode... Will look into it.
How long can you play? Do you even get into the game or just the start menu scene?

I can load the game and play successfully using the monitor display and mouse and keyboard. although i only tested for a few mins.
Its just that the game refuses to load on the headset display.
If so, can you either disable the slower one (device manager) or unplug it and see if that works?
Option 1:
Start the game with commandline parameter "-openvr_force_proximity" (without the "")
Option 2:
Add the following line to the config.xml in the game-directory (somewhere inside the <root> block) :
<openvr_force_proximity>true</openvr_force_proximity>
