What is an example of an "in-joke"?
The May 8th patch notes say that the patch turns off in-jokes by default. What is meant by "in-jokes"?

Like Delores picking up the broken ketch up bottles and saying that if she were in a sierra online adventure game she would be dead.

So I have yet to start playing this one but the developers now turned these jokes off by default. Any reason for that? Is the game actually better with or without them?

Sounds to me like turning them off will make you miss out on a lot of cool stuff.

If you've played the old adventure games, you will want the in-jokes.
If this is the first adventure you play then those references will make no sense.

Reference humor is the worst.

So I've finished the game 100%, loved it and will probably replay it at some time in the future but a question for the sake of anyone playing the game first time with the in-jokes off (which might make sense - I initially found it a bit much):

You get an achievement for using the navigator's head to find the treasure - this, and where you end up, is just one big reference to Monkey Island 1. Is this whole section removed if you play with in-jokes off?

Ah well. Maybe a dev'll come in or someone'll check. If not, not the end of the world. :)

Yes. With in-jokes off, the navigator head does nothing. You can take it in the woods but it will not work/spin.

For completists who want to get all the achievements, it is necessary to switch on the in-jokes option.
