Less In-Jokes?
What jokes do get deactivated exactly? Those "a boo"-lines from the sheriff?

example at the bus stop. when you go to far right of the screen. your character says "there is no path beyond this point. mhm... looks like an empty room the developers forgot about." (something like that)
But with "Annoying In-Jokes" <deactivated> (F5 or Ctrl-o >Menu >Video >where the toilet paper option is above) the line would only be "there is no path beyond this point." skipping all the meta-developer-in-jokes so to say.
honestly what's wrong with people? :-) otherwise I love options, so I'm 50/50 about this. but I really want to meet someone who was really "annoyed" by the funny in-jokes. I loved that about Monkey Island too.

PS: You can instantly switch that option on and off, try out different situations in the game. or try with Delores "Use" "broken ketchup bottle".

I didn't mind the in-jokes. After all, I'm the sort of audience they're for. But I can't say I found them all that funny or interesting. They do take you out of the world of the game a bit, and I can see how that could be irritating. Worst of all, at least one puzzle solution would definitely make someone unfamiliar with the developer's history feel out of the loop, and I reckon that's a shame. As it was originally, I'd hesitate to recommend the game to anyone who isn't a die-hard. I'm re-playing with the In-Joke option switched off, to see if that would improve the experience for newbies, and if it does its addition will have been a massively smart decision.
I WILL switch it back on for the couple of fun optional things you need it on to be able to do, though :)

The in-jokes just prevented the game from shining with its own merrits and increased the feeling that is was a pure retro exercise. I am a bit sad that this option was not there when I played it: just adding the in-jokes for a second playthrough would have added some replay value. Especially since some of them point at the creation of the game with a slight appearance of a developer's comment.

These people haven't made a game like this for nearly 30 years, and the ones they used to make have gone down in legend as the best examples of their genre. I think it was therefore entirely right and proper that for their comeback game they would be tipping the hat quite a lot to what came before, and delivering plenty of self referential gags.

If they were to do it again for their next game though (assuming that happens) then yeah, that might be more of an issue.

Having finished the game I can't understand why one would play with the in-jokes off.

Story aside if you came from the sierra/Lucas says then the 4th wall breaks shouldn't be that big a deal especially for a humour based game.

Turning it off by default seems almost a big middle finger to reviewers that complained. If I recommend this game I warn the person to enable it before going on.
