the lift in the hotel

Hi,

when you play the game, you have to go up and down the lift in the hotel a lot of times, even more, when you are generally randomly searching for stuff (which I do have to do when I am stuck. :D )

It is a pain in the ass to wait around in the lift to go up and down. Did I miss some shortcut here, do you think this is an element of creating a very hotelly feeling or something like that or is this waste of my time just bad game design?

The purpose of the elevator (quite simply) is saccharine, overly sentimental, sanitized presentation of what it feels like to be in the throws of base-level unbridled caveman-style comedy. The "different levels" just put all that unconscious/subconscious instinctive stuff back, while keeping the sanitized version going... over the top of it. This humorously provides a tongue-in-check revelation to the player regarding what the hotel is really all about. Its kind of like becoming simultaneously aware of both conscious and subconscious thought streams. This delivers a wry incongruity which is the very foundation of humor. Considering what was going on in popular culture at the time this game came out, a release of subconscious material into the conscious mind was something to be expected. It was de rigueur, actually.

Yeah I kept hoping the escape key would skip it. It works on ladders and the sekrit meetinglift.
