No diplomatic visitors?

I have been playing this game for a few hours now, population is at 1000. Apparently there are supposed to be diplomats who visit, but I've yet to have any. Could this be related to my island being the only one on the map?

You will receive diplomats if you have placed AI kingdoms on other islands on your map. As you anticipated you can only place these AI opponents at the map selection screen and only on a map with multiple islands with sufficient resources to sustain a kingdom. If you are on a single-landmass map you will have to start a new game on a map with islands to play with the AI kingdoms. At the map selection screen if you are on a map with sufficient islands you will see the boxes with a plus symbol at the bottom that you can use to add an AI to each island that qualifies.
