So wood walls are literally useless
So there's two types of attacks in the game right now, Vikings and Dragons. You get two types of walls to block them off: Wood and stone. They have the same HP, but wood can be set on fire, and stone can't.

... Both enemies primarily destroy your buildings by setting them on fire. Since dragons can fly and ogres can walk through deep water, the only thing that wooden walls can actually keep out is Vikings... who instantly set every single wood wall in the chain on fire when they hit them.

I just.... what the ♥♥♥♥? There's literally no reason to ever build a wood wall. They are completely, utterly, and thoroughly useless. Your kingdom is literally better off WITHOUT walls than with wooden walls, because fire spreads across the walls and can burn buildings even before the Vikings get inside, which they will 100% of the time even with a fire brigade right next to the wooden walls.

I wouldn't mind this so much if the wooden walls didn't look pretty for small external villages outside of my main city. My options are either build a massive unfitting stone wall around this tiny micro iron mining village to defend it or just... not to defend it at all and let vikings burn down the entire thing with its wooden "walls".

Playing on hard by the way. Hard isn't too difficult once you get the hang of it, but I'm completely perplexed as to why wooden walls are even in the game, as-is. They are quite literally less than useless as both enemy types completely ignore them via fire and/or flying and the cost time and effort to build.

honestly i didnt build huge walls with the wooden walls
I just made them 3 high for defences

also wood walls are easier to make at the start of the game

Also, it’s better to have Vikings burn down your wood walls instead of your homes and quarries etc. wood walls aren’t meant to be a permanent solution.

With wood walls vikings just burn down the walls and then walk in and burn down everything else as well.

They're honestly not much easier, and IMO it's literally better to have no walls at all than wood walls given how totally useless they are.

the game doesnt give you instantly 1000 stone so until you get it you may as well have some defences (e.g. put archers and catapults on them) also you can use walls to stop ogres as well

+1. They are useless. Vikings will enter to town with or without wooden walls.

Yes. Only useable as base for solo archers tower, not as "wall"

walls will delay your enemy and give you more time too kill the vikings and anyways, just because YOU and some other people dont use the wood walls doesnt mean other people wont use the walls
Lionbreaker08 Feb 10, 2019 @ 9:31pm
anyways im done with this argument, gtg

wood walls are not a defence if they burn and lit your houses and quarries on fire through fire spread
even if they delay its like a chain reaction and your whole wall is on fire and then your whole building
and while your people try to extinguish the wodden walls all your houses burn down to the ground
Yea in general situations you are way better off with no wall at all

Wood walls helpt out quite a lot early on for sure. Id rather build a big stone tower to get the max range bonus and then a quik wooden wall to give the tower time to kill vikings.

Early on stone is a lot slower to get when u just have one ore 2 quearys

Wood is a lot easyer to get and u can olways drop down a forestry closer to where u need to build lowering the walking distance a lot

Making it easyer to build a quik wall when u are claiming land for a new big settlement or something

And a cheap wooden wall can make it so that 1 or 2 towers destory a viking group before they kill or kidnap ppl. Where without a wall u would need more towers costing u a lot more stone and money

wood walls give you time to train armies, make archer towers a high priority job so all are armed and ready for battle also, stone walls have +1 HP than wood
Emperor_Peter Feb 12, 2019 @ 2:51pm
I use wood walls 3 high for quick and dirty defense towers, because stone walls are too hard to build without a large population to man quarries

but other than individual towers, and/or if you like the asthetic, i agree, they're kinda useless

BTW there is a glitch where if wood walls have rubble on them they won't burn because rubble can't burn and walls burn top to bottom.

Rubble can burn now, so that glitch is gone.

At first I thought the exact same thing about wooden walls.
But taken into consideration how the AI works, you can effectively block whole sections and tunnel Viking raiders to the towers you have, without them setting anything on fire.

First: Vikings can only set something on fire if they have normal troops in their groups left. If only the flag holder of the group survived (which has the most HP) they doesn't set anything on fire.

Second: Vikings groups attempt to reach a road of yours and follow them while burning everything alongside.

So the solution is simple. Leave one tile between your road and your wooden wall. Put archer towers alongside your wooden wall and as soon as the Vikings travel along the road they get shot so the group can't set anything on fire, even if the group leader still survived.

This is an early screenshot of one of my latest hard mode runs. The wooden wall is still standing well after 100 years into the game and only some ogres destroy one or two walls per raid.
