What is the use of moats????

I placed down walls and moats around the castle for only a viking giant to jump in, smash the wall down, and all the other vikings swam the moat to invade! Question being, what is the use of moats, what am I missing????

PS: Why are there no draw bridges folks?????

The moats are supposed to slow down the ogres and vikings. I just use them to give my houses waterfront bonuses. But yeah, with the current pathing situation, vikings are relatively unphased by moats.

I just build a second row of two castle blocks in front of my big towers to make sure that if an Ogre manage to destroy a tile then it won't be one of the kickass towers which took forever to build which go down.
