You need to build a all of war and recruit a hero/general (I think the game is inconsistent in the terminology). They can then recruit and lead your troops.

okay, so y have a bug, i can't recruit a hero/general :/ I'm going to start à new game thx

Note that you recruit your hero/general in the Hall of War, then move them over to the barracks and have them pick up the troops you have trained.

I have found that your 'hero' will just sit there, with his troops and do absolutely nothing while vikings are running all over the place. I guess you are supposed to micromanage what he does and where he goes, but the process of doing so is extremely unintuitive and it seems most of the time, even if you manage to get him somewhere, he still doesn't engage the enemy even when standing right beside them.

Armys/troops need some work.

Yeah I am not sure what to do with my soldier it doesn't seem to attack the vikings or anything even when he has troops.

Armies are completely useless, don't build them. Or do what I have done, stop playing completely and uninstall the game.

Well you are meant to build your walls to keep enemies out and then you position your army where theyre trying to break into your kingdom from. The army then attacks when the enemy is on their square

Yes, and just what are you supposed to do 'prior' to being able to ring your island with walls? A ringed island is a late game strategy, whereupon the game is mostly done. This does not help us for the majority of the time we are actually 'playing' the game.

Yeah I agree there. Pretty much dont bother with an army just build stupidly large towers with arrows and ballistas on them. 5x5 and like 15+ levels. Working well for me in year 450 with 900 population.

armies are good to block narrow points
Parandrus Jul 22, 2017 @ 4:33pm
you wont have any narrow points unless youve got some god tier city on a god tier island on a god tier resource pool

If you've played Kingdom Rush you can kind of think of them like barracks. They keep the attackers busy while the towers finish them off

But they dont vikings walk right through them and they fight while in contact and then they continue onto your town (if they survied) while your soldiers just sit in the road doing nothing

I don't recommend building armies. They take lots of population, which means more food and housing, which means more land, which means a larger area to protect. Vikings just ignore them anyhoo.

I do recommend that you build lots of quarries early on to stock up on stone, then surround your base in walls to funnel vikings into arrow tower chokes. Once you have a good first base, completely wall off islands you want to expand into before building stuff. This will ensure the vikings will land near the arrow towers.
