I am a bit disappointed that they only repair walls damaged by ogres.
There currently is no way to watch their progress. If you click on the mason's building, you can watch them all hang out there all the time. But damaged items still get repaired.
If the wall or building is reduced to rubble, they won't fix it. If there are cracks in it, they will fix it. When a mason is assigned to the job, scaffolding appears around the first floor of the wall/building. When the scaffolding goes away, it is repaired.
I think their range is the whole map. Having more masons results in more items being repaired simultaneously.
