As you rise in levels, you can make bigger barrels, chests, large chests, shelves (30 items) and even magic chests!
But, until I havea coupla brick houses I usually chuck everything on the ground, with food in one area, building goods in another spot, and something else elsewhere, and then I decide to reorganise the spots.... and then I build a heap of large barrels!!!
I do keep a lot of things on the ground but I wish I didn't need to. I would personally suggest another storage option to be available at level 6-7 since that's around when the barrels just really stopped being too functional for me.
I place Barrels near each of my constructions such as Craft Table to keep items in needed for crafting stuff
Wool, Fabric, Canvas, Hides are stored by my Tailoring Table
Food items are kep in Barrels by my Cook Table and I usually have several barrles there located in a manner for easy access without having to move around much
by level 10, you'll have Capacious Barrels that hold 24 items and Shelves that hold 30
where the basic Barrel & Chest hold 10 items each
use Barrels indtead of chests as Barrels only take up 4 tiles on the build overlay where chests take 8 yet they hold the same amount.
therefore you can effectively double the storage inside a Hut of Branches by placing the barrels along the back wall and down one side.
for the basic stuff like sticks, logs, Palm leaves & Coal, I leave them neatly stacked near where they are used
Sticks by my Bonfires for Embers
Logs by my Coal Smokers
Coal near my Blast Furnaces
Soil near my Seedbeds
clay, Sand, stone and Palm leaves are neatly stacked in out of the way spots for access
once you have access to the Magic Boxes, place one by a convenient area such as your Altar and keep the other one on you
<it only take 1 item of inventory when disassembled yet the Green one holds 5 slots>
once you have these, keep important items inside it so they don't get stolen should you get killed
like Gem Chips, Coins, Scorpion Stingers, or Metal Ores
the Blue one holds 10 slots and is good for Ore Keeping
