You can, press "B" then use the destroy option. You will get some material back.

True for things you build, but not clothing, weapons, etc. I hate to just trash stuff that, at the time, took a great deal of effort to create.

I'd really like to see this also. All my stone tools and wooden tools got upgraded, throwing away 8+ items with nothing back seems a bit of a shame. Gonna upgrade my leather set and I am cringing a bit. Would be nice to get back part of the materials used.

Then, yes I aggree, a recycle/salvage option would be nice!
