I’m in chapter 1 and I did 3 free time events with Gonta only he didn’t rank up the third time.

Past danganronpa games never had caps on how far you could progress a character so I don’t know what the ♥♥♥♥ went wrong.

And the game explained nothing to me.

There are also no guides explaining how free time events work so here is all I have left.

What do I have to do to get actual progress consistently?

I'm sure you already figured out why by now, but during the first chapter, you're capped at 2 events per person.

In case anyone finds this later, you can only get the first two free time events with each character while you are in the first chapter. Significant story events happen after that which become the subject of any following free time events. It is like Nagito from DR2, you could only do his first event until a few chapters in, because of what happens with him.

Having a cap on progress with a character seems like a good idea to me; it removes the incentive to focus completely on one character at a time to gain whatever skill the character grants at the max level and forces you to appreciate more characters.

Danganronpa 2 literally had Nagito capped on chapter 1.
