Story wise DR 1+2 was the best instead of DR v3.
Playing 1+2 then 3 may tick some player off.
Buy them when they're on sales, especially V3 because it's still a little bit overpriced. Based on the price drop of the previous titles V3 is very likely to have it's price lowered in a year or two.
Each game would take around 30-50 hours to complete ( 30+ hours to finish the main story and another 20+ hours if you want to play their mini games and get achievements etc. ) Personally I've enjoyed every minute spent playing all three games during my first run and I would say even though it's very expensive for a 30 hour long Visual Novel I can still recommend it.
I didn't try out UDG though, I'm only talking about my experiences with 1 2 and V3.
Bear in mind that V3 does have some minor issues with the controls while you're playing it full screen. For example, some of your mouse clicks won't register in the game making it a pain while going through dialogues. This can be solved by playing in border-less full screen.
Just make sure to play with open mind and think it as another universe.
Aside from the story the game is good you know.
