Is DRV3 canon?
So after reading stuff on internet I was wondering if this game is important for the main story or no.
Thx for the answers.

If by "main story" you mean the story of Danganronpa 1 and 2, then no. V3 takes place in a brand new setting.

V3 does NOT take place in an alternate universe and I have no idea where people get this idea from. Interpreting the game as such, sure, but that's not concrete.

I think it depends on how you interpret the end. There is a possibility that what Tsumugi said is true, but we also have the possibility that she lied to us\ or maybe was also confused. So, yeah, I believe all three games are connected

/sorry for any gramma mistakes, english is not me motherlanguage/

The devs themselves have stated that V3's setting is separate from the one in the Hope's Peak Saga:

You are, of course, allowed to have your own theories on the matter, but I don't think this thread is the right place to discuss them.

Yeah, the setting isn't the same, of course, but that doesn't mean the game takes place in an alternate universe. And why wouldn't this be the tread to discuss this? The title of the read is asking if V3 is canon or not, and there isn't a concrete answer to that question.

i don't think so as Makoto is the principal of the "new hope's peak academy" thing as an adult, as shown in one of the scenes near the end of the game

regardless if it is canon to the main universe or not, the story still applies. sure they may have just shat on all the lore, but that lore still exists within the "danganronpa universe" within the game. so think of it as a game within a game.

i personally don't care as i just forget about it, but i can see it bothers other people for some reason

We won't really know for sure until another entry in the series is made, but for me personally I don't consider this game canon in my head. The game was good, but the direction it takes the plot is extremely disappointing IMO, on the other hand it'd be easy to fix. It's kind of hard to say without spoiling anything but there is a definitive answer given in the game.
I feel like the object of V3 is not to say it isnt canon, but that the events of the whole story were fabricated entirely for a very gruesome Television series

the reason I say this is because while I can believe an elite highschool existed and MAYBE junko DID cause the school to go kinda loopy and kill people inside it, and then eachother, etc. I doubt SHE ACTUALLY destroyed the world, or the remnants of dispair ever went on a rampage, or a secret future foundation was ever created to fight them, or that millions of monokumas were killing and imprisoning people, etc.

The premise of V3 being explained from the beginning It was a reality killing game, where participants would sign up to be mind wiped and imbued with a specific talent and fake life, and be forced into the killing game the audience would then vote on who they wanted the next killer and victim to be, and it would be motivated in the next episode, or for US, chapter.

it was also revealed at the end that

this was the 53rd season of the show

so with everything in mind that the events of the previous games were a bit hyper dramatic.....and the implications in the spoilers.....not an alternate universe but what is described in the spoilers.
