Actually, from a certain point of view, it may be a better choice to specifically *not* play any of the games prior to this one... or watch the anime's, read the novels, et. al.
And all Games are very good, so if you are into this kind of games play them all and if you do, better play them in release order.
I didn't play Despair girls, though.
This game is pretty much the ending of the series (in theory). So to get that full impact of the ending you may want to play the other games first. Not only are they good in their own right, but it puts the wham of the ending to better effect.
For me, the price was fine... the ending was definitely not.
That leads to my comment earlier in this thread... I think that if I had not invested the time and effort (about 200 hours through multiple playthroughs on both PC and Vita) into DR1 and 2, I probably would've liked (or at least appreciated) the ending to V3 a lot more.
