The shepard, Newton, what exactly was his purpose in the game? I guess I must've missed the part where they explained what he did. Luca sent him into the past but he lost his memories...and then at the end of the game he sends Tractie back to the future to help Luca. But why did he go to the past...? <_<

He was the Great Sage who fought Baba Yaga to a draw. He's one of the three souls Luca sends to the past. However, after his fight with Baba Yaga he places a seal on himself (I can't remember the exact reason why) and that's why he's really dimwitted. His brain is being throttled. That's also why when Dronya tries to control him, it breaks the seal for a little bit and he starts talking about Baba Yaga.

From what I've gathered from reading the story, he was sent to the past because he has the power to send souls, or anything non-physical, to the timeline he's from. Neldo was supposed to find the soul that was capable of defeating Velkuvrana, and Newton was supposed to send it to the future. Tractie's soul was sent to the past because the Tractatus de Monstrum took decades to conquer the labyrinth in the future!Mezzaluca's timeline without a soul, much like a dysfunctional AI and they wanted the past Luca and Dronya to fare better. It was only after the three souls were sent to the past did Mezzaluca found out the soul they sent to the past was the soul they needed in the future.

He sealed his memories because they feared Baba Yaga would realise who Newt really was and kill him before they had the chance to find the soul and the name Neldo and Co. were looking for and send it to the future.
