Sealed Items
Is there a downside to 'forcing' sealed items? And when do you unlock the ability to unseal them with mana?

Later on in the game, alchemy will allow you to properly unseal items. Forcing an unseal will make the item less powerful.

A little after you get Alchemy Cauldron. If the item has more than 2 pages of question-mark do NOT force it.
Also, sorting the item will give you an idea of what type it is. A sealed sword between two worn sword will result in a worn sword as well. Just make sure you try the auto-sorting stuff before doing anything.

I don't think I've unlocked alchemy, does that also allow you to extract souls from unique items? I've got several and I dunno how to access the souls.

Re: artifacts, yes, the alchemy pot allows you to get souls from them.
And to answer my own question: unsealing unlocks pretty soon into the third dungeon.

Unsealing is pointless to hold off on for sealed items you get early on in the first dungeon, and even the second dungeon. It's only really worth holding onto them if it's an armor item, really. Otherwise the gear tier is so much better in the next area that it will overshadow everything you have found, otherwise.
