So this game a failure?
Day 1 mixed reviews, less than 4k people playing right now and the top voted review is negative with over 270 people finding it useful. So...a failure?

Nope.
But should have been an EA in its current state, judging by all the streams I've watched. Hopefully, they'll improve the AI's path finding skills and decision making, while ironing out some bugs in a forthcoming patch or two.
There's some ♥♥♥♥♥ they need to fix. And balancing.

4K players for a niche game like this ain't bad, is it?

Negative reviews generally tend to get the most positive attention, afaik.

It is a way worse game than their previous effort.

4,000 concurrent players is still around 50% better than Mordheim on release. We could extrapolate and say that means it may sell 50% more.

But we don't know how much has been invested in it to begin with, so it's not clear how commercially successful it needs to be.

The AI in this game is laughable. I refunded because of that alone. Hopefully it gets patched. I'll take another look if it does.

I'll be honest, it's a very average game imo and my biggest disappointment is that it's Mordheim 1.5. I enjoyed Mordheim to an extent but I expected more (in terms of improvements) or a different direction, got neither. It is light on content for the price in terms of playable clans, it's just not enough of a step up.

I'm sure hardcore Mordheim fans are enjoying it, it's not complete trash but it won't appeal to a much larger playerbase than those hardcore fans in this state. That said I respect peoples tastes and considering this a niche game the numbers aren't that bad. It was never going to be a 20K+ player game.

Nah. It's fine. People with problems (genuine and imagined) tend to be on forums looking for solutions or having hissy fits. So your pool of opinion is always skewed.

this 100%

people enjoying the game are busy enjoying the game and aren't flooding the forums/discord/reviews

By far the worst release ive ever seen. Graphics reminds me of a worse version of Fallout 3, its clunky, the AI is so stupid it makes the Total War-series look like the computer that beat Kasparov in chess.
I refunded it which ive only done with games once before.
If people find it enjoyable, great. I however would like someone else to take over the reins when it comes to the WH franchise.

It probaby is a decent game. They did make some very silly choices though. They should have known people would come to this from tehir Mordheim game and look for an evolved experience. Locking customization options for player gangs behind the story campaign is not a good move.
I am an Escher player. Telling me to play the campaign is not much of a problem, as I instantly jump into the gang of my choice. Telling the Goliath player he has to play Escher and Orlocks before he gets to play Goliath so he can then customize the gang he wants to play? Likely to make for a grumpy Goliath, and grumpyness will then make the Goliath notice other problems they may have been willing to ignore before.

There's thousands of people playing it concurrently. It would be a failure if it was a triple A game. But as an A game? It's a pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good result. You people should understand not all the games' budgets turn around in the high millions.

Well 63% of the reviews are positive, therefor its a success for the majority of people who bought it.

The questions should be - is it fun for the average consumer and is it fun for the target audience? I'll find out in a couple of hours when I have time to play.

It is in my opinion. A big step down from Mordheim except for MAYBE the graphics.
Kelset Sep 8, 2020 @ 10:09am
The game has good things, but when it comes to gameplay pure and simple, it sucks because it's badly designed. Very badly. It's a cheap take on Mordheim which is immensely better. Doesn't make sense to compare it to the TT since it has nothing to do with it in the first place. Would have been better if it was a 1:1 port? Absolutely YES, but that would be a completely different game. As it is now it's just a very under average, poorly developed "turns" based game with bad development and boring gameplay that don't even fit what has been castrated in the name of: which would be PvP. In this state it's a cancer to be played in PvP as well and it will never be, if doesn't get a HEAVY overhaul.
