But should have been an EA in its current state, judging by all the streams I've watched. Hopefully, they'll improve the AI's path finding skills and decision making, while ironing out some bugs in a forthcoming patch or two.
There's some ♥♥♥♥♥ they need to fix. And balancing.
4K players for a niche game like this ain't bad, is it?
Negative reviews generally tend to get the most positive attention, afaik.
But we don't know how much has been invested in it to begin with, so it's not clear how commercially successful it needs to be.
I'm sure hardcore Mordheim fans are enjoying it, it's not complete trash but it won't appeal to a much larger playerbase than those hardcore fans in this state. That said I respect peoples tastes and considering this a niche game the numbers aren't that bad. It was never going to be a 20K+ player game.

people enjoying the game are busy enjoying the game and aren't flooding the forums/discord/reviews

I am an Escher player. Telling me to play the campaign is not much of a problem, as I instantly jump into the gang of my choice. Telling the Goliath player he has to play Escher and Orlocks before he gets to play Goliath so he can then customize the gang he wants to play? Likely to make for a grumpy Goliath, and grumpyness will then make the Goliath notice other problems they may have been willing to ignore before.
The questions should be - is it fun for the average consumer and is it fun for the target audience? I'll find out in a couple of hours when I have time to play.
I'm Not SURE man,....i think , i'm quite liking it, mmm love it actually.
BUT
i know , what i'm really SURE,....
you'll be forgotten, and the game ...NOT
