Defeating Mangar in Sulphur Springs, advice needed
No matter how much I follow the advice of this guide (https://guides.gamepressure.com/the-bards-tale-iv-barrows-deep/guide.asp?ID=46484) to defeat Mangar, I can't seem to get anywhere. I use the song of Compulsory Cavorting, I destroy his stupid totems, but after six turns or so (even without totems) he just casts a powerful spell that immediately kills everyone. Seriously, is there a code that lets you skip this boss? It's just awful.

Whats your party composition? I never did anything in that guide. Just killed excess specters, stripped his armor, and killed him.

Another guide here:

Also not sure if its an option but you could leave and come back later with more levels? Don't remember if you are stuck there ...

Wow, thank you both so much! I am using a Bard, two Practitioners, a Fighter and a Rogue and was thinking of ditching the Rogue. Well, it looks like I have my work cut out for me. The reason I felt hopeless is that there really are limited opportunities for leveling up eventually; I've cleared out every accssible corner of the map except the Dwarf labyrthinth and that dungeon adjacent to Sulphur Springs, so it didn't seem like grinding would take me any further.

Update: I have two level 17 rogues, two level 17 practitioners and a level 17 fighter. Still no go.

Hey Spacecoyote, I ran it by David Rogers for some post-Patch 4 advice and he came back to me with this:

-Use draining weapons or vorpal plating to remove spell points from him. These buffs combo well with Storm of Blades.

-Use AOE attacks like Rain of Arrows and Sweeping Slash to kill lots of mana totems at once. Combo with strength potions to one-shot the totems.

-High damage combos like Storm of Blades + Razor Strop after rending off his armor can make quick work of his health.

-Be sure you have plenty of people focused on mental damage. You cannot ever afford to let him complete a meditate.

-Head-Knocker, Blackjack (to stun once), and most importantly Mangars Mind Jab/Arcane Barrage are critical. Practitioners using priestly robes or sorcerers robes w/ a Sceptre will insure you have high intelligence, which these spells scale off of. Elven Sorcerers are the best in the game at breaking focus.

-When in doubt, use lots of potions. Strength and Focus potions will be your best bet. If you’re an alchemist enthusiast you’ll get the most out of these hyper powerful buffs for particularly hard fights.

-Lastly, to avoid damage from his bleed + pushback combo, Dwarves and Outlanders are your best friend. Dwarves cannot be forcibly moved (so they don't take bleed damage) and Outlanders cannot bleed.

Thanks for this super generous input! Before reading this I finally was able to beat Mangar by focusing on stunning him, and boy did that make it all easier. But this guide will definitely help, since I still needed to do it on Easy. I'm learning a lot from this one encounter, that's for sure.

This fight seems to be impossible without respecing most of my characters. Never invested in in the Vorpal Plating line, did not take Razor Strop or Skills that focus on mental damage. The tokens in the game are limited. Dont know how to overcome this.

As an older guy who played the originals I cannot get past this mangar boss no matter what I do. Reminds me of destiny knight snares. I thought a lesson was learned there. Except now I have more things to do in life than to grind this out. Was a fun game until this point. I quit.

Took him out yesterday you need Mental Spell or attacks to break his channeling, also try to destroy the bubbles he summons as fast as possible. It helps to use razor strap on a rogue or to tag the enemies for more damage like with arcane barrage or with falkentynes fury. Managed to kill him. But I want and respect my chars and did a another dungeon to level up more

One pre-fight tip that helped me: before you trigger the cut scene, use your rogue's hide in shadows skill. Skip the cutscene, then immediately charge Magnar to initiate the fight before he truly "sees" you. Getting to go first makes a pretty substantial difference, letting you crank up meditations/drink potions/etc., before the fight really gets going.

I just beat him finally, this was my strategy. I went with this party: two fighter both with shield, one with guardian, three mages all with arcane barrage and mind jab, one rogue with sunder and mental techniques. Bring plenty of potions of armor and healing and the faerie grenades.
When the cutscene ends. run towards the boss to have the initial attack (IT'S VERY IMPORTANT), then taunt him with the ability to cut in half his armor and finish it with sunder blows from rogue/fighter. Then, it's all a question of time and patience, when the boss focus, break him with mind jab or the rogue skill, while use arcane barrage and the grenades to destroy the totem. I found granades very helpul because they straight kill the totem in the same space and the explosive aoe very likely will destroy or damage the totems around. In this way i killed him pretty easy with no casualties, while before he destroyed me countless times... hope it helps ^^

JESUS! This was a hard battle. What I did was change to game settings to easy. Have a character rend Mangar's armor and other characters eliminate his orbs.
