I first thought the game was balanced around 4 party members. Then read the FAQ and it was stated that you can go up to 6.
For me personally it's a role playing aspect if I name the party after my family. We are 4....and no dogs/cats so. :-)
Well I could also go with naming the party after my friends with whom I played a lot of PnP role playing games. Would be more fitting.
I also like to bend the game to my likings. For example I am not fond of wizards in games. They are often overpowered and if it is possible to make a party without one I will try it. (I guess I will make an exception in this one).
And for this particular combat mechanic I thought having 4 party members is more flexible movement wise since you only have 8 spaces. With 6 members it will get really crowded and you will end up getting hit by spells.
