This is especially true if you have a contemporary system. The game was designed and created for first and second generation pentium CPU, typically with RAM that's measured in megabytes, so it shouldn't be that resource intensive for the latest systems that have gigabytes of RAM.
There is a patch out there that fixes the gods' animations. You might want to install that and see what happens.
