EDIT: I bit the bullet myself, bought and installed the game, then threw the patch over it. Apollo is lightning fast in the sandbox tutorial, so I'm pretty hopeful about this patch.
Link to original author of the patch: https://www.gog.com/forum/zeus_poseidon_acropolis/windows_7probably_xp_too_slow_gods_spawnblessattack_animations/page4
It appears that the Impression's coders, way back when, attached some of the gods' animations to the splash screen animation where you see the montage of the art as the game is loading. So when some of the gods appeared they came into the game painfully slow.
I'm wondering why it took over twenty years to solve this, and how a fan over at the website was able to catch what the original team didn't.
Great patch.
Worked like a charm :-)
Thanks
