Better than Dusk

Playing this game for the first time (gog) and already won me over "modern" attempts to revive the genre such as Dusk. The level designs are far more interesting to explore, more challenging and much more cohesive and even if the soundtrack just plays on a loop i also found it more fitting that Dusk, which at times just seems to exist on it's own instead of giving atmosphere to the game. Gunplay and movement feels also more grounded and solid overall and even while using sprite enemies these seem more lively than Dusk brainless 3D models which just eagerly run to their deaths in front of your gun.

In short, they just don't make it like this anymore and games like this shouldn't be underappreciated over modern yet completely shallow imitations. To anyone who has doubts about playing Redneck Rampage today i can say it's totally worth it once you deal with any Soundtrack or control configuration issues. Truly a crazy, bad ass game still today.

Yeah, the only reason why Wolf3D, Doom, System Shock, ROTT, Heretic, Dark Forces, the Build engine games, etc. are hard to play now is because we've been spoiled by WASD and freelook, and it's hard to go back to arrow keys.

No need to go back to the arrow keys when the settings can be wasd. Once I became accustomed to wasd I never wanted to go back to the arrow keys - too much mental gear changing.

OP, you absolutely nailed it with 'shallow imitations'.
But it's not just Dusk. Every other modern attempt at making a shooter in a retro '90s style is shallow compared to beautiful level design in RR that just shines through every inch of its handcrafted maps. No one managed to top it as of yet and probably never will.
