You need to upgrade tables and kitchen level in the tavern and when you see food appear on the table, turn off auto equip in settings and refresh beds until you see a soda junkie at the food table then click him, some of them will be named dinner boy, they give you a nice starting weapon.

do you have to be at the start of the game to get it? I just made it to the 5th world

You need kitchen level 7 or higher. I'm not sure if there is a direct requirement for stools or tables level, but they're cheaper at max than lvl 7 kitchens and more tables means more chances for dinner boys. Once you have lvl 7 kitchens, you need to set the auto equip option in settings to NEVER, otherwise you'll never see dinner boys. Dinner boys are actually soda junkies in almost every way including appearance. To hire them, once you meet the above criteria you click on soda junkies at the tables as if you were going to hire them. Every so often their name appears as Dinner Boy instead of Soda Junkie. Hire the Dinner Boy and he comes pre-loaded with a bib (30 health armor) and a fork (weapon with some attack, 60% crit chance and 200% crit damage). Before you get the taps upgrade in ViP, this procedure is easiest to accomplish with a fresh dimension because you don't have to sift through other mercenary types appearing at the tables before you buy the sodas. In fact, I highly recommend you do it every time you take the portal to a new dimension just to get 5 forks which are incredibly nice weapons for early runs until you find better ones -- big crit chance and big crit damage is hard to pass on.
