it said it was better drops, but i haven't gotten any from there, and since the enemies are tougher, i don't make it as far, and that meant less gold and less loot... I do /think/ i got more essence, but my upgrades cost so much at this point that fraction more wasn't worth missing out on level 6 and level 7 items

Probably nothing good until the later dimensions or the final one, even. But yeah, it gives more gold per kill early on and "supposedly" better drops, with the later levels having items unobtainable in the regular dungeon.

But again, I doubt it's worth it until the late dimensions, when you can go pretty far down and reliably so.

Theres a few items, that can ONLY drop in LoD. Im in d4, so I went til 300 a couple of times, but never got one of the special drops.

Mythical items can only drop from LoD, I farm it with +Item Dropchance % items like Sacrosanct, Royal Shield and Vaan's Magnet on every char. After my 2nd run like that I had my first Mythical item, Arcane Quartz ring, held item, +60% magical crit chance & +20% mag crit dmg.

I know this thing is a couple years old, but to anyone still wondering, and/or confused:

Lair of Despair is GREAT to farm around 4th or 5th dimension, around there you get like 1mil per farm, if you save that up (or even a hundred k) you can get the magic well, which makes Lair of Despair farming essential, Lair of Despair gives more gold than the regular dungeon, and with the magic well, you can turn that gold into essence, which you can use to upgrade your relics to get further in the Lair of Despair and/or regular dungeon...basically, magic well is essential to Lair of Despair farming, and Lair of Despair farming is (practically) essential to get further in the game.

And yes, there ARE exclusive drops to the Lair of Despair.

If you really wanna test out the gold output from both areas, I recommend getting as far as you can in LOD, marking how much gold you got, then get to the same level in the regular dungeon and bail, marking how much gold you got. I'm pretty sure if you compare them, LOD will show to get you more :T

Merchant with all gold boosting items is perfect for LOD :T

Merchant isn't that good a choice.
It isn't just about how much gold you see pop up on the rewards at the end. It's also about how fast you get the gold by clearing levels.

Merchant wastes some gold on their 50/50 skill which has no chance at all of killing it's target.

Since the gold per kill doesn't go up a whole lot every level, you're better off stickig in the level range where you can 1 round kill for as long as possible. If it takes you 2 rounds to kill a level, that means you're getting effectively 1/2 the gold from that level in the same ammount of time you could kill a lower floor for a slightly lower gold ammount.

Because the 50/50 skill can't possibly kill it's target, it is effectively a wasted attack even if it does work. The next attacker will have to do at least 1/2 the enemy's health to finish it, which you may as well have done with another of those classes in place of the merchant since the merchant can't even kill low lvl enemies with the 50/50 skill, only take their health to 1/2.

Even at the point where 50/50 skill does more than a normal attack, you're taking entirely too long to clear each level. 2-3 attacks per enemy means you aren't going to 1 round the 3 and 4 enemy levels. Plus, it costs gold to use that 50/50 skill, which isn't reflected in the end total you see for the run. Spending gold and time (which means gold) for a useless skill that can't kill things is a bad idea.

During dimension progression, your best team will be 1 or 2 healers, 2 or 3 thieves and 1 knight. The healers are only ther ebecause they can get you past a few more bosses for slightly higher level item drops. Healers will melee attack almost all the time and they are almost as good at melee damage as thieves.
