Actually it was said that it goes like this :

SSVR The Last Hope > SS4 (currently in dev) > BFE (first 9 levels) > Jewel of the Nile expansion > BFE (rest of game) > TFE (first 10 levels) > Legend of the Biest expansion > TFE (rest of game) > TSE > SS2 reimagined (sometime in the future).

Also, keep in mind that regarding TFE and TSE, the canon entries seem to be the Fusion (remastered ones), as their stories will be in some ways updated to be more consistent with the other games. Classic and original HD seem no longer canon :(.

I take it that BFE stands for "Before First Encounter"... which is a bit silly really, because obviously an encounter before the first encounter is actually the first encounter, making the "first encounter" the second, and so on....

So if there's a SS4 BEFORE the "before first encounter" this is really going to upset the naming conventions.

It's not 'Before First Encounter', so that's not a problem. It's just BFE, and any interpretations are just that - interpretations. It might as well be 'Blow jobs For Everyone'.
That's why they never officially called it anything else than BFE. It can thus mean 'Before First Encounter', 'ButtFuc.k Egypt' and anything else. Pretty clever.
