For anyone with *DOW 2 crash on start* Windows 10 (FIX HERE)
I encountered this problem today,press play, steam says starting game, black screen, bugsplat report. I tried integrity and even reinstalling from a clean boot. Still hung on startup of Dow 2.

Assuming it needed old files as it is an old game I checked the Dirext x version and tried to get a current version from Microsoft. No dodgey 3rd party files for us, guys!

I tried using the distributables in the steamfolder but that did not resolve the issue.

I then went for a fresh copy from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8109

Installing this now lets all of my DOW 2 games work again.

Solution that worked for me was to delete the 2 files in the root installation folder.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dawn of War 2
DivxDecoder.dll
DivxMediaLib.dll

I then searched google for those files and downloaded new / updated ones and bingo the game works. Took me a good amount of time and troubleshooting to figure this out. Good luck.
I did the deleting and replacing of the 2 files and i've got the game working but the cutscenes are black but still play with audio do you have any ideas on how i can fix this.

Hey man where did you download the two files? Sorry not clued up on these types of things
No dice on my end with replacing those two dlls. A friend of mine has a "functioning" install of the game, minus sound errors, and I managed to receive them from him.

That being said, my issue is likely different from everyone else here, in that it's tied to access violations & the audio itself. So take that as you will.

My DOW 2 is still not working. I've followed every step posted on this thread to no avail.

I have just picked the DoW2 bundle up and note that my game launches fine, runs on the main menu fine, can benchmark fine, and run the first mission fine UNLESS I try to change ANY settings - even just something innocuous like audio. As soon as I do this and try to apply changes, the screen blacks out (but keeps the DoW cursor) and I have to force a program closedown via task manager. If I then relaunch the game, it will crash again as soon as it finishes the splash screens and gets to menu. Revalidating the install via Steam lets me run the game normally again (until I repeat any setting changes); I assume the revalidation is reverting the settings back to default (wonder what would happen if I changed anything via a cfg file?)

Can I confirm this is the same issue the above fix is for? Most instances of this I have found elsewhere are a bit vague on specifics and just mention it 'crashing on startup'.

edit:
I should add that this is on a 5600x (6 cores), so presumably shouldnt be related to the core-count issue some ppl have.

Luego de actualizar directx, cambiar los 2 archivos sugeridos, usar compatibilidad wondows 7, seguía sin funcionar, cambie el idioma a ingles y se solucionó
Something else to check. I am running an AMD Ryzen 9 3950X with 16 cores. It seems that when this game was developed processors did not typically have more than 8 cores. I opened the AMD Ryzen Master app and disabled 8 cores and the game started up properly. You can go into dxdiag if you do not know how many cores your processor has.
