I'm not a big fan of ELITE, but it's not malware as far as I know. There is a player base for Vanilla, which I prefer, but only under custom games. That's where 100% of the player base is for vanilla, save for Last Stand.

That is the vengeance of the blood ravens one right? If so then I did. A very fun mod if you don't mind the crazy power levels of certain races and units. Major downsides for me at least, was pretty frequent crashing, AI derping out and getting themselves stuck, and slowdown that occurs in longer/larger games. If not for those issues, it would easily be one of my favorite mods.

elite mod has way too many snobs who will kick you if you are new, i have not experienced anything like it in the base game. as for more ppl playing? i can't really tell, it seems to be still popular for the base game.
