Is this game worth buying in 2020?
Hello, there! I'm a lover of all things warhammer. Only warhammer I haven't played is the tabletop sadly because of my remote location (East Tennessee). This game looks like great fun, but I worry about the amount of hours I'd be able to get out of it even with all the dlc. Could I get my moneys worth even if playing single player? What is replay value like? Does the game do the lore any justice (not that important but ya know this is my thing)? I'm very interested in this title and would like your opinions! Also, if I do get the game i will love it just because I'm such a warhammer nerd, and eventually will try multiplayer. Will a newcomer to DoW II be able to play or is the community toxic? Thank you in advance, -TGB

This is the best Warhammer 40k game. Much better than Dawn of War 3. Graphics still hold up very well in 2020. If you're interested in a single player/campaign, then pick up Dow2, Chaos Rising, and Retribution. Chaos Rising had an especially good campaign. If you just want to play multiplayer, then just get Retribution. It has skirmish mode for multiplayer, as well as a more casual 'last stand' mode which is fun. MP is still active. Also, the campaign has co-op option if that interests you.
You can usually pick up 'the complete package' for like $20 on sale, and there should be a steam summer sale very soon (rumor is June 24th).

Some good mods out there too like Elite mod or Vengeance of the Blood Ravens. I think I still prefer Dawn of War 1 with the UA mod, but Dawn of War 2 with Vengeance of the Blood Ravens is fun as well.

The DLC for the game is mostly, if not exclusively, cosmetic. So you're plenty fine for just the basic asking price. If you intend on playing multiplayer, Retribution will serve you real good. If you intend on spending time with the campaign I'd recommend getting the Dawn of War 2 bundle when on sale. Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising has a much better campaign with better focus through only playing from the Space Marine perspective (where Retribution trades a shor campaign for one that is playable with all races).

Game got excellent design all-round. Good visuals, clean and tidy. Simple controls (with a few quirks). Addicting, albeit repetitive campaign. Good multiplayer with a surprisingly active community (naturale and modded alike) - and excellent audio; superb music and tons of lovely attention to detail in the voices and overall soundscape.

So, yes - get it!

Try running it with compatibility mode set to windows XP, and as administrator. Haven't had this problem myself, but try a forum search.
Also, you could try turning off the steam overlay in properties. Sometimes this helps.

The game is worth it but if Last Stand is your thing then be fairly warned, more than a few bugs (that will never be fixed) exist. They range from minor to major pain in the a$$.
