I'm sitting 2.5ft away from a 43" screen at my computer desk and I can definitely tell the difference between 1080p and 4k! In fact, when I got this TV they told me that there was a 90 day no questions asked return policy so I said what the hell I can try it on my PC for free for 90 days and just bring it back.....well...I was blown away so much by 4k that I wound up keeping it. I was still on a 970 GTX and of course any newer games where a slideshow at 4k but boy did it look so good that it made me also upgrade to a 1080 GTX.
I will agree for movies/film plasma is still hard to beat but not very good for gaming IMO and they suck a lot of power and create a lot more heat than a LCD. But I think you can tell much more of a difference between 4k and 1080p with games rather than movies....
Take the expert challenge and read any article / comparison between a 1080p mid tier plasma vs anything 4k and the IQ will be superior on the plasma in too many ways to discuss here . You are right about the heat - we sold two older models because of the heat alone ! Newer one's fine . Notice IQ at any distance ( we are far away in this room ) on plasma . The 4k is only noticed around 5 feet give or take ( 55 inch )
