Connect the dots puzzle

That puzzle where you have to finish that helicopter sketch suffers from ridiculously non-intuitive interface design, I'm sure other people will scratch their head about what to do at all, aswell.

I was searching for the pencil THAT I JUST PUT THERE MOMENTS AGO TO START THE PUZZLE, but it wasn't there, and just trying to put the ruler to two dots didn't seem to do anything.

But a helpful soul on the comments section of a youtube walkthrough wrote this:
OK, that "connect the dot" game, while poorly explained, is possible to accomplish! The ruler is just that- only a ruler. You must line the ruler up with two dots on its edge, "click" on a dot-it will turn red- now "click" on the other dot- it will turn red, also. Now, magically, the pencil finally appears and draws a line between the two red dots. If the line is a dotted green line, they do not connect the two dots. Realign the ruler edge connecting the two dots, click and click, and if the pencil draws a "red" line than THAT is the proper line. Connected dots turn into a "white" ring with a red center and those can also be connected to another green
dot. It can be done. It just takes time.

replaying this from 2017, pretty sure I never finished this one first time and since I needed to finish all the mini games w/o a hint I was determined to finish this one. video's weren't a help since everyone skips it. guides few and far between so no help. this post was a big help! so thank you :). It takes some doing to find which dots to start at but if this helps, you can start anywhere but you need to align the ruler, click on the dot, red dot then the one you aligned that one with and if it's correct it will draw the line and you don't need to keep connecting those. eventually you will see the pattern to connect all the ones left. tip: start at the front of the plane

If anyone else is having problems with this mini-game puzzle the solution is in my video walkthough, the puzzle starts at 3:55 but I finally figure out what I'm doing at the 5:13 mark.

One of the worst puzzles I've ever seen.
