Im kinda confused about mounts...

Is there a reason to use ground mounts? i just use a flying mount thats flies vertically, then switch to the flying mount that flies horizontally. It seems that i move much faster this way, and im not dismounted by monsters

It's really not easy, maple leaf is the only "free" fast flying mount available, and it's pretty rare. Many people are going to finish this event without seeing it and people who started later have less chance to obtain it.

Going to have to hope next event has a similar mount.

If you unmount or change mounts, it resets the animation of your current mount, so changing between horizontal and the balloon, while allowing the balloon a second to rise, will make you ascend *really* quickly. Just requires you to have the patience to do it every time you need to go up. Becuase of this, the pumpkin balloon is the best vertical mount, since it goes up a good distance in a second, instead of going up at a constant rate.
