That was an obvious design decision both from a time when controllers were more primitive, and games needed a steeper learning curve to increase replay potential. Part of the challenge that is involved in such games is getting a handle on the finicky controls. I wouldn't say they are better or worse then they were previously. Which I suppose is kind of the point. If the controls got a lot better the game would be a lot shorter, and much less challenging.
I know it's an old thread, but hear me out.
Back then we played only by keyboard. WASD + mouse was not our way, we used the arrow keys for movement, never touched the mouse during gameplay. When I was a kid in the late 90s, early 00s, I used to remap every game for the arrows and ctrl+alt, but then in 2003 Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb came, and you could not swing on a rope, if you remapped W and S to the UP and DOWN arrows, because those were locked in for climbing. You should not touch your mouse when playing these games at all.
