STAR WARS™: Shadows of the Empire

STAR WARS™: Shadows of the Empire

How are the controls?
They were horrendous for the 64 even though the game itself was great. Have they been made better here?

Sadly no, they're really dated and some of the options can't be changed, the biggest offender is moving you mouse forward and back moves Dash foward and back. I have no clue how someone thought these controls were good 20 years ago.

Nah, he's right, mouse moving in the air is fine but when you're on foot, it's atrocious and to make matters worst you can rebind keys, except that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ one. :serioussam:

Really I don't think it's that bad if you just use the keyboard. Arrow keys to move camera, WASD to move, X to jump, C to duck, and CTRL to shoot, it's pretty simple imo.

The controls are really wacky, and it may take a few levels to get used to, but I was able to complete the game using a WSAD and arrow key combo, sometimes I'd use the mouse just to aim while holding down V but that was it.

This game was from a different time, and requires a different state of mind. You can't judge it by modern standards, or a modern frame of mind. This game is both a strafe shooter, and a classic platformer experience. Each jump is death defying, and each shot about timing. The controls are going to be counterintuitive, and no matter the interface the character is going to be difficult for one to control.

That was an obvious design decision both from a time when controllers were more primitive, and games needed a steeper learning curve to increase replay potential. Part of the challenge that is involved in such games is getting a handle on the finicky controls. I wouldn't say they are better or worse then they were previously. Which I suppose is kind of the point. If the controls got a lot better the game would be a lot shorter, and much less challenging.

the controls are okay. ive not played this version back in 1997 when it came out on windows 95, but it works alright, the mechanics and level design are dated and you will have some issues at the mos eisley level (like always) but it still holds up.

Just play in big picture mode and use a steam controller. Can completely set your own buttons with no issue that's what I did.

u dont need that, i got it working on a xbox controller, just put the strafe set to LB and RB, crouch to the right thumbstick click, back as the camera change, y as activate, a as shoot, down on the dpad as weapon select, x as manual aim. it works very well this way

for a old game like this, especially since the original version was for consoles, a controller would be needed. it uses tank controls

I know it's an old thread, but hear me out.
Back then we played only by keyboard. WASD + mouse was not our way, we used the arrow keys for movement, never touched the mouse during gameplay. When I was a kid in the late 90s, early 00s, I used to remap every game for the arrows and ctrl+alt, but then in 2003 Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb came, and you could not swing on a rope, if you remapped W and S to the UP and DOWN arrows, because those were locked in for climbing. You should not touch your mouse when playing these games at all.
