Cannot Turn Off Trial By Iron Mode

I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times on multiple drives and Trial By Iron Mode is locked "ON". I can't turn it off.

Same. I am seeing posts from 2018 of this. Apparently Obsidian give up? Though, to be fair, seems like an uncommon bug. Im playing on PC, every thing normal, no mods or any funny business. got maybe 20-40% through story on a first playthrough and wanted to start a new one (greatsword devoted feeling weak).

One of those old posts said full reinstall worked. Trying that myself (back up saves)

Uninstalling once allowed me to start toggeling off expert. Uninstalling and reinstalling a 2nd time free'ed up Trials of Iron from perma-toggled on.
