Is there a way to avoid getting jumped by the guards when fighting Lord Imp and Katrenn? I've played the game several times and it's never happened before, but in this playthrough the guards have decided to get involved!

yes, talk to him to get him to be hostile, run down on to the dock so he has to come with you, dont AOE.
